Description:
The USA is among those countries that have the highest percentage of people singing in choirs (currently 38 million). The choral tradition is booming in America, and there are a broad variety of choirs that maintain a wide repertoire of contemporary choral music. In this sense, there is a big difference between Germany and the USA in how the tradition of choral conducting is approached. This master class will fea- ture American compositions, with a focus on interpretation, rehearsal strategies, conducting technique and intonation. A workshop with the New York based Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo will also be offered, in which he will present his own choral work. Prof. Giselle Wyers (University of Washington, Seattle) will give an introduction on the educational system for choral conducting at American universities. The master class is designed for professional conductors, as well as advanced students of church music, school music and conducting, and other interested musicians. Ten participants will be selected to work together with Nicol Matt and his Chamber Choir of Europe. During the work- shop, the passive participants will constitute the choir.
