Composition Award for female composers

ASAWCA 2013The Anders Wall & Allmänna Sången Composition Award is an international competition exclusively for female composers within mixed choir a cappella music.

This year the university choir Allmänna Sången celebrates its 50th anniversary as a mixed choir. To celebrate this occasion Anders Wall and Allmänna Sången decided to announce a composition award open only for female composers. In Sweden today, as well as in the world in general, there is an equality deficit regarding the attention given to female composers devoted to classical music and their compositions vis-a-vis their male counterparts. Hence, this competition aims to increase the awareness of female composers and their work. In this pursuit the competition not only fosters the creation of new pieces by female composers, it also highlights the discourse of gender and equality in the world of classical music. With this aim Anders Wall & Allmänna Sången Composition Award hope to receive numerous exciting contributions that will enrich and develop the field of polyphonic art music.

The competition is open to anyone, and compositions should be written for a mixed voice a cappella choir with 4–12parts, duration 6–9 minutes. Lyrics – new or pre-existing – are chosen by the composer. Note: It is the composer’s responsibility to seek written permission to use a pre-existing text.
The competition will be judged by a jury chaired by conductor and composer Robert Sund (Sweden). The winning piece will be premiered by Allmänna Sången at its annual spring concert in Aula Magna at Uppsala University. The winner receives SEK 50 000 (approximately € 5 700) apart from getting the winning piece published by Gehrmans Musikförlag.
