12th European Festival of Youth Choirs Basel, Switzerland 2020

Worldwide, the European Festival of Youth Choirs Basel is considered the most renowned international platform for highly qualified children’s and youth choirs. Since its inception in 1992, the festival focuses on the encounter of Europe’s best children’s and youth choirs with each other and with the local public from the Basel region as well as on giving concerts for a demanding audience.
An audience of nearly 30,000 listeners is expected to attend the festival’s roughly 50 music events. The concerts are aimed primarily at an enthusiastic lay audience with an interest in music. The choirs’ musical programs need
to have a skillfully designed dramaturgical concept and offer variety. Including specials such as soli, accompanying folk instruments and choreographies as well as a creative use of the concert location, sounds or language is indispensable.

In addition to the festival concerts, “Open Singing” for the audience takes place daily. Country portraits and roundtables provide in-depth insights into the cultural backgrounds of selected choirs as well as choir-specific topics. A lively, international guest scene provides for exchange among choir experts.
Another 1,200 children and youngsters from all over Switzerland give concerts in festival-related events such as sing alongs and matinees.

In keeping with tradition, ten children’s and youth choirs from Europe, one guest choir from another continent and seven children’s and youth choirs from different language regions of Switzerland with around 800 singers will take part in the festival.

The next EJCF will take place from Wednesday, 20 May to Sunday, 24 May 2020. Deadline for applications: 31 January 2019
